Why you need to control the humidity level at home

Taking care of the humidity and temperature in the home, especially in winter, is essential for the comfort of the space and the people who live there.

Why you need to control the humidity level at home

The humidity inside a house affects not only people, but also the animals, plants and objects that live there. It is not only a matter of comfort and well-being, an inadequate level can promote the appearance of allergies, asthma or respiratory infections .

To avoid this and according to the Regulation of Thermal Installations in Buildings (RITE) , indoor conditions in winter must be between 21-23ºC and 40-50% relative humidity , especially in rooms more susceptible to humidity problems.

Important factors to detect humidity problems

When the humidity in an interior space reaches 70% RH , the effects become visible and perceptible in different ways:

  • Condensation on the inside of windows
  • Cracking and peeling paint, or peeling wallpaper
  • Cracking of wooden elements
  • Appearance of rust on metal objects
  • Stains on the walls
  • Appearance of fungi, molds, moss or other pathogenic elements
  • Moldy smells

These problems appear more frequently in places such as damp walls, basements, the ceilings of the house or bathrooms and kitchens where water vapor is usually more concentrated. In the long term, if these factors persist over time, they do not fix themselves and can invade the entire house until it is demolished.

Advantages of a portable dehumidifier for humidity in the home

Portable dehumidifiers meet the objective of reducing ambient humidity to create a healthy environment at home. Its operation consists of passing a stream of air through an evaporator, which is at a temperature below the dew point, causing ambient humidity to condense and drip into a tank or drain.

These devices usually have a water collection tank with a sensor that controls the liquid level . Thus, when the water reaches its limit, the dehumidifier turns off and indicates by. The tanks may take between 6 and 12 hours to fill (depending on each model and its extraction capacity). For the device to continue working, simply empty the water tank.

The benefits of having a dehumidifier at home manifest themselves in different ways:

  1. Improves thermal comfort, reducing the sensation of heat in summer and cold in winter.
  2. They prevent material damage to parquet, furniture and walls as a result of the appearance of mold and stains.
  3. They prevent bad odors in corners, the bottom of furniture or the inside of closets.
  4. They reduce the risk of suffering from allergies and respiratory diseases by preventing the growth of pathogenic microorganisms.

What should we take into account when selecting a dehumidifier?

  1. Water extraction capacity according to the need to reduce humidity.
  2. Dehumidifier power according to the volume of water in the environment.
  3. Weight and size, if we want to have it fixed in a space or move it through different rooms.
  4. Tank capacity.
  5. Sound level if we live in apartments or need to dehumidify in a quieter way
